Rarely does a solo piano invite you to dance — but that's exactly what Valentin Barray does. Rooted in a family musical tradition, Valentin grew up surrounded by folk music: his father Laurent, an accordionist, shaped his ear from the very beginning, teaching him to play by feel rather than by the book. That connection to dancing music never left him.
His album Mirages is a cycle of original compositions inspired by traditional dances, and it launched him into the bal folk world — with over 150 performances across Europe, building a direct, living bond with dancers and the movement.
His compositions span the full palette of bal folk forms — waltzes, mazurkas, and more — crafted specifically for the floor. The piano, usually heard from a concert stage, becomes something warmer and more immediate in his hands: an invitation to move.
Behind this sits a formidable musical foundation. Valentin trained at the Rouen Conservatoire and went on to earn a Master of Performance with first-class honours at the Royal College of Music in London, winning prizes in contemporary piano along the way. But none of that creates distance — it simply means the music breathes with clarity, intention, and rhythmic precision that dancers feel intuitively.
Whether you're spinning through a waltz or settling into a mazurka, Valentin Barray's piano is a partner you can trust.
